Toronto is the fourth safest city in the world. That’s an amazing feat of which we should all be proud. But, like many other assumptions we make about where we live and how susceptible we are to being the victim of a break-in, we shouldn’t let Toronto’s safety standing give us a false sense of security. We can always use a refresher when it comes to home security lessons.

Whether it’s living in certain neighbourhoods, or using certain home security devices, or any other thing that makes a homeowner feel “it won’t happen to me”, it’s wrong to think that you’ll never suffer some sort of property crime at some point in time.

A news story at CBC.ca from earlier this year highlight how some of our preconceived notions about people, homes and locations that are more or less likely to be burglarized, can be way off base.

The article offers an account of how eight people in a burglary ring, potentially operating as far away as Montreal, were busted. Here’s a list of some of the facts that can help homeowners better protect their homes.

BURGLARS ARE WELL ORGANIZED

Instead of being the ‘lone wolf’ burglars that most homeowners envision, the ring was “highly organized” according to police.

TARGETED HIGH-END HOMES

The ring targeted certain neighborhoods, particularly those with high-end homes, thinking they would find more valuable goods in those homes.

THEY BROKE-IN AT DIFFERENT TIMES THROUGHOUT THE DAY AND NIGHT

You should always lock your doors because there’s no time when your home is safe from a break-in. In fact, 7 of the 8 burglars were caught around 5:30 pm on a Saturday evening, after committing a burglary.

VIDEO SURVEILLANCE HELPED CATCH THE THIEVES

Just before their arrest, the burglars were spotted in a vehicle that police first identified in footage from the surveillance videos they collected from some of the homes.

Even in a city as safe as Toronto, no home, and no location is immune from property crimes. Your best defense is to make sure your house is equipped with different ‘layers’ of security, including high-security locks, video surveillance and alarm systems, and you keep your doors locked at all times too.
